Black Bean Veggie Burger

This recipe is a delicious meatless mainstay, and the cayenne gives a little spice. Try topping your burger with fresh salsa and avocado.

  • 1 tsp. olive oil
  • 1/2 cup mushrooms washed and roughly chopped
  • 1/2 cup corn kernels
  • 1/4 cup onion roughly chopped
  • 1 cup fresh spinach lightly packed
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
  • 1/16 tsp. ground cayenne pepper
  • 2 tbsp. rolled oats
  • 1/2 tbsp. flaxseed
  • 1 tbsp. water
  • 1/3 cup. cooked brown rice
  • 1/4 cup bell pepper roughly chopped
  • 1/16 tsp. hickory or mesquite all-natural liquid smoke optional
  • 3/4 cup black or pinto canned beans rinsed
  • 1/8 tsp. ground paprika

  1. Sauté vegetables in oil and seasonings until softened and set aside.
  2. Add oats and flaxseed to Twister Jar and place Twister lid on jar. Hold Twister lid and blend on a low speed for 10-12 seconds; turn Twister lid counter-clockwise during blending.
  3. Add water, beans and rice to jar and place Twister lid on jar. Hold Twister lid and with other hand press "Pulse" 6-8 times (while turning Twister lid counter-clockwise).
  4. Add sautéed vegetables to Twister Jar and place lid on jar. Hold Twister lid and with other hand press "Pulse" 6-10 times until desired consistency is reached (remember to turn Twister lid counter-clockwise during blending).
  5. Form a patty with blended mixture. Heat a greased pan over medium to medium high heat and cook both sides of the patty until heated through.
  6. Serve with your favorite burger toppings.

    Is there something I can substitute for mushrooms? My husband dislikes mushrooms.

    I just made this on Saturday and it turned out great! Some recommendations for those having trouble with the consistency/forming patties:

    1-try adding chia seeds/extra flax
    2-use a wooden/plastic spoon to scoop the mixture around so that it’s more uniformly mixed after every couple of pulses
    3-stop blending all the ingredients together when they are still al little chunky
    4-put all ingredients in a large bowl, scoop a hole in the middle and place in the fridge/freezer for 10-20 minutes until mixture is cooled down-this really helps with the patty forming process
    5-make smaller patties-if you try and make larger ones it’s easier for them to fall apart when you flip them

    Success: if you are not averse to adding eggs I recommend adding 2 per jar-specific recommendation (if you are following the recipe for use with the Wild Side Jar, as I did, use 4 eggs). Add the eggs AFTER the mixture is cool, mix it all together with your hands then roll into patties and cook-they turned out perfect every time after I added eggs :)

    Replaced with-more beans & corn (portions equal to mushroom portion the recipe calls for)

    Replaced with-freshly cooked quinoa

    Replaced with-chia (used 2 tbsp for the Wild Side Jar doubled recipe version)

    This was fantastic instead of ordering burger deals. I served it with homemade chipotle hummus with lots of cayenne pepper mixed in. Really good!

    Recipe could be improved by adding instructions for how to use the batter after it comes out of the blender. Do you form it and slap it on the grill, or run it through a dehydrator or what?
