Make Your Own Superfood Powders

make your own superfood powders

By Nicholas Kowalski of NicksFit

Blendtec blenders can blend everything: smooth smoothies, hot soup, tasty desserts, batters; the list goes on and on. I'll let you in on a little secret; another amazing use for your Blendtec: making your own superfood powders.*

You’ll find some sort of powdered supplement in most health food stores—greens formulas, herbal formulas, and of course protein powders. With the Blendtec, you can make them yourself at a fraction of the price. Best of all, if you learn to identify some of these plants/herbs that grow wild (such as dandelion root) you can dry them yourself and blend into a powder—all for free!

How to make it

The ingredients depend on what you want to make. If you want to make your own greens powder, simply dehydrate some of your favorite greens (parsley, cilantro, kale, mint, etc.). You can dry your herbs and plants by placing them in the freezer for a few weeks. This cracks open the greens’ cell walls, similar to freeze-drying.

Once your ingredients are dehydrated, blend in your Blendtec until they’re as broken down as possible. Then run small batches of the blended powder through a coffee grinder, if necessary. Put the resulting finer powder through a fine strainer or sifter. Add to smoothies or soup, or even capsulate them for ultra-convenience!

*Note: Overtime, grinding powders and herbs in your jar may cause it to look clouded or stained and to smell like those powders/herbs.
