I have heard the question a thousand times: “How do I lose the weight around my belly?” Many people have the misconception that if they do abdominal exercises (crunches, leg raises, sides bends, etc.), then they will “spot reduce” and lose the fat around their stomach. This is NOT TRUE.
When you burn calories through exercise, you burn fat throughout every cell in your body. Fat does not just come off the areas of your body that you are working. Yes, you are building the muscles in that area, but if there is a layer of fat over those muscles, you still will not be able to see the muscles. So how DO you lose belly fat? Work large muscle groups with complex exercises.
- Working large muscles will increase the amount of calories you burn. Exercises such as deadlifts, squats, presses and rows will build more muscle, burn more fat and release the hormones that will help you burn more fat.
Kick up the intensity of your cardio workout.
- Slow and steady cardio exercise is not going to do much to rev up your metabolism or burn that many calories. When you do high intensity cardio instead, you not only burn more calories during your workout, but you will continue to burn more calories for the next few hours after you are finished.
Change your diet.
- To lose belly fat, you MUST eat a healthy, well-balanced diet full of vegetables and fruits, lean proteins like fish and chicken breast, and whole grains. Eating smaller meals 4–5 times a day rather than 3 larger meals will help rev up your metabolism, which means you will be more efficient at burning fat
