Did Goats Discover Coffee?

The History of Coffee

It’s National Coffee Day so it’s only appropriate to tell the story of how coffee was discovered. The only problem is, there’s more than one tale to tell! I’m going to share the most common (and entertaining) legend of how coffee was discovered. This legend is said to have taken place in the 9th century.

Kaldi, The Goat Herder

Once upon a time, there was a goat herder named Kaldi. Kaldi loved his goats. One day, in the highlands of Ethiopia, Kaldi noticed his goats acting excited and frisky. Some were even dancing! What was making them act this way? Kaldi found some berries the goats had been snacking on and popped one in his mouth. Soon, he too became lively. He gathered a handful of the berries from that certain tree and took them to the abbot of a local monastery. The abbot made a drink out of the berries and discovered that it kept him awake and alert throughout the night. He decided they were a gift from God that allowed him and his monks to pray throughout the night. The energizing effects of this berry were shared with others and slowly made it’s way east. It’s reputation was eventually spread across the globe.

So, there you have it! Fable or not, it’s entertaining to picture those crazy goats, isn’t it?
